Know Your Status: Why HIV Testing Is an Act of Courage

There is a quiet courage in walking through the door of a testing centre. In a society where HIV is still whispered about — where a positive result can carry crushing social consequences — choosing to know your status is one of the bravest things a person can do.

At MMAAK, we have sat with men before and after their tests. We have seen the fear in their eyes walking in, and the relief — regardless of the result — on their way out. Because knowing is always better than not knowing.

The Cost of Silence

In Kenya, an estimated 1.5 million people are living with HIV. A significant portion of them do not know it. They are not accessing treatment. They are not taking steps to protect their partners. Not because they do not care — but because they have not tested.

For men especially, the barriers are real: busy work schedules, fear of judgement from peers, distrust of health facilities, and the persistent myth that HIV “doesn’t affect people like me.” These barriers cost lives.

What Happens When You Test

If your result is negative, you walk away knowing — and you can take steps, like PrEP, to stay that way. If your result is positive, you gain access to life-saving antiretroviral therapy that can keep you healthy for decades. In either case, you are no longer in the dark.

Modern HIV treatment is so effective that people on ARVs can reach an undetectable viral load — meaning they cannot transmit the virus to others. Treatment is not the end of life. It is the beginning of living fully.

MMAAK’s Free Testing Services

MMAAK works with health partners to provide free, confidential HIV testing across our communities. Our peer counsellors — many of them men living positively — offer a non-judgmental space where you can ask questions, receive results, and access ongoing support.

You do not have to do this alone. Take the step. Know your status.
