Our Partnership with AMREF: Strengthening Kenya’s HIV Response

No organisation can end AIDS alone. That is why MMAAK has built partnerships with leading health institutions — and one of our most valued is with AMREF Health Africa, one of the continent’s foremost public health organisations.

Who is AMREF?

AMREF Health Africa is a pan-African health development organisation founded in Kenya in 1957. With a presence in over 35 African countries, AMREF trains health workers, strengthens health systems, and delivers community health programmes that reach millions of people. Their commitment to sustainable, community-driven solutions aligns deeply with MMAAK’s mission.

What Our Partnership Looks Like

Our collaboration with AMREF focuses on building the capacity of community health volunteers and peer educators who form the backbone of MMAAK’s outreach. Through AMREF’s training programmes, our teams gain access to up-to-date clinical knowledge, communication skills, and tools for community mobilisation.

Together, we have reached thousands of men with HIV testing, counselling, and linkage-to-care services. AMREF brings technical depth; MMAAK brings community trust. It is a partnership built on complementary strengths.

Why Partnerships Matter

Community organisations like MMAAK know our people. We understand the local language, the cultural context, the specific fears and barriers that keep men from engaging with HIV services. But we also benefit enormously from the resources, research, and networks that institutions like AMREF provide.

This kind of partnership — between grassroots movements and established health institutions — is increasingly recognised as the most effective model for lasting public health change.

Looking Ahead

We are grateful for AMREF’s partnership and look forward to deepening our work together. Our shared goal is a Kenya where every man knows his HIV status, has access to treatment if needed, and lives free from stigma.
